Gründung

Sie entstand, als die Alfred Beit Bridge, eine Straßen- und Eisenbahnbrücke, die den Grenzfluss Limpopo überspannt und heute die Staaten Südafrika und Simbabwe verbindet, im Jahre 1929 erbaut wurde. Die heutige Brücke stammt von 1995. Die Stadt liegt nördlich des Flusses, rund einen Kilometer von der Brücke entfernt.

Infrastruktur

Die Hauptstraße führt von der Grenze mit Südafrika in Simbabwe 321 Kilometer nordwestlich nach Bulawayo und 281 Kilometer nordöstlich nach Harare über Masvingo. Die die Brücke überquerende Eisenbahnverbindung führt von Gweru an der Hauptstrecke Harare–Bulawayo nach Johannesburg in das benachbarte Südafrika.

Die Stadt verfügt über 161 km Straße, wovon 39 asphaltiert sind. Es gibt 6 Grundschulen, 4 weiterführende Schulen und eine Berufsschule. Die medizinische Versorgung wird durch ein Krankenhaus und 2 Ambulanzen sowie 4 weitere private Einrichtungen abgedeckt.cite-ref-ucaz-3-0[3]
